Keeping Your dog Cool During the Summer Heat.
Keeping Your dog Cool During the Summer Heat.
Alright, summer’s coming in hot—literally. While we’re out here throwing back cold drinks and cranking up the AC, our four-legged best buds are stuck rocking a fur coat they can’t take off. So, it’s on us to make sure they stay cool and comfortable when the temps start climbing. Let’s break it down.
1. Hydration is Key
Water, water, and more water. Always have fresh, cool water available. Got a big dog? Invest in a jumbo water bowl. Pro move? Throw in some ice cubes to keep it extra refreshing. You can even make dog-friendly ice cubes with low-sodium broth or frozen fruit.
2. Find the Shade
If you’re outside, don’t leave your dog roasting in direct sunlight. Set up a shady spot with a pop-up canopy, a big umbrella, or even a cooling mat. If you’re chilling in the yard, let them hang under a tree or on a covered patio.
3. Cool Down with Water Fun
Sprinklers, kiddie pools, or even a hose—dogs love it. Fill up a plastic kiddie pool with cool water and let them splash around. Got a lake, river, or beach nearby? Even better. Just make sure the water is safe and your dog isn’t drinking a bunch of salt water.
4. Timing is Everything
Walking your dog in the middle of the day? Rookie mistake. Hot pavement can burn paws faster than you can say "bad idea." Stick to early mornings or evenings when it’s cooler. If you have to go out during the day, test the pavement with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.
5. Cooling Gear = Game Changer
Ever seen those cooling vests for dogs? So worth it. You soak them in cold water, wring them out, and they help regulate your dog’s body temp. Cooling bandanas and mats also do the trick. Basically, think of it as your pup’s version of air conditioning on the go.
6. Frozen Treats for the Win
Make your dog some frozen treats with plain yogurt, peanut butter (xylitol-free, of course), or mashed banana. Freeze them in an ice cube tray or use a Kong toy for a longer-lasting cool-down snack.
7. Keep ‘Em Inside When It’s Blazing
Sometimes, the best way to beat the heat is to just stay inside. If you’ve got AC, let them chill out with you. No AC? Fans work too—just make sure they have good airflow and a comfy spot to lay down.
8. NEVER Leave Them in a Hot Car
You already know this, but let’s make it crystal clear—leaving your dog in a parked car, even for “just a minute,” is a no-go. Cars heat up crazy fast, and even with the windows cracked, it’s a recipe for disaster.
If you’re feeling hot, your dog is definitely feeling hotter. Keep them cool, keep them hydrated, and give them all the shade, water, and chill treats they need to stay comfortable. Do that, and your pup will be living their best summer life—right alongside you.
